Where to eat on Kalymnos – Restaurants, taverns and ouzeri

On the island of Kalymnos there are many restaurants and greek taverns where to eat good local fish especially fish at  reasonable price The local cuisine, also offers some specialties that deserve to be tried as: Mermizeli or Kalymnos  salad, made with homemade barley rusk, caper leaves, tomatoes and kopanisti (smooth goat or sheep cheese), the Mouri, the traditional whole lamb stuffed with rice and the mouth-watering Galaktompoureko, a delicious dessert.

In the capital town Pothia you will find most of the restaurants and traditional ouzeri in the seafront area. Only few are located between the small streets behind the harbor. One of these restaurants is Xefretis with a tradition dating back to1915. The place is hidden in the alleys behind the Church of Christ offers a menu with several dishes of the local cuisine as musaka and stifado (beef), baked lamb in addition to the excellent grilled meat.

Rebetiko tavern on the waterfront of Pothia is very popular with locals, serving only traditional dishes such as dolmades – filla  as the locals call it, the Mouri (lamb filled with rice), or Kavourma (pork with eggs).

To eat fresh fish the best area is the village of Vathi with cute tavernas on the harbor and the tables set up on the banks of the sea. Provide a romantic atmosphere and tranquility as well as fresh fish and different meze (appetizers) from the sea. Absolutely recommended Poppis tavern, run by Mrs. Poppi offering probably one of the best kalamari in the Dodecanese.

Vathi is located near the beautiful beach of Akti with the eponymous tavern, excellent choice for a unpretentious lunch. Located near the beach, is a very simple and basic place, serves daily fresh fish and few homemade dishes.

In the area of Massouri and Myrties you will find several restaurants serving both Greek and international cuisine, including Italian restaurants and pizzerias and Chinese food.

Excellent food at the local tavern Psarokatastasi, down to the beach Myrties, frequented mainly by local fishermans offers seafood dishes and home cooking. From the terrace, on which are arranged the tables,  is a beautiful view of the bay and the island of Telendos.

Nearby is located the picturesque tavern Psiris, typical tavern with a blue-white exterior. This tavern is frequented mostly by tourists,  serves delicious fresh fish, grilled octopus and squid. It Is well suited for an aperitif accompanied by some meze as it offers a spectacular view of the sunset. Glass of ouzo and grilled octopus could be a great choice.

Do not miss the opportunity to dine in Telendos islands. The small caiques that connect the two islands go back and forth until late. Dinner in the taverns of Telendos is a sublime experience. Tables are set up along the sea side, there is absolute tranquility to enjoy the sea and the lights of Kalymnos as well as fresh seafood of all kinds.

In Emborios, in a beautiful garden is located Harry Paradise run by Mrs. Evdokia. The products use are exclusively local and biological, some of them are even of their own production, such as excellent olive oil, vegetables and fruit as well as the original jams and wine. The menu and daily specials vary depending on the season. Before Emborios a dirt road  leads to the bay Palionisos. It is a very isolated bay, but well known by locals for the beautiful sea and two excellent fish tavernas.
