Fira and Oia, the jewels of Santorini

Most beautiful villages of Santorini, those with white and blue houses, bli domes and narrow alles are located on the caldera. Therefore best way to see them all is the trek from OIA to FIRA nearly 10 km following the path that cuts dreamy landscapes: Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli. An ideal place to capture in some of the best pictures from Greece. You can go back by public transport or rather decide to walk only the shortest way from Fira to Imerovigli.

Capital town Fira

Fira is the capital of Santorini island with a population of about 2000 inhabitants.  It is the main stunning cliff-perched town, featuring all that Oia has, but much more overcrowded. Tourists and visitors stroll its picturesque streets, enjoying the charm of this beautiful corners stopping for a coffee or choose some gifts to take back home. It rises high perched on the edge of the Caldera at about 300 meters above sea level and offers a breathtaking view of the submerged volcano and the its islands. (Thirassia, Nea and Palea Kameni)

This is also the most important commercial and administrative center of Santorini with shops, restaurants and taverns, bars, cafes and nightclubs, luxury hotels and apartments. The village is like the tourist expects the Greek island to be; white houses, blue churches, narrow streets, stairways, bougeville, small taverns and shops with colorful details. It is the one of the most visited place not only by tourists staying on the island, but also by many visitors who arrive by cruise ship and flock to the capital for a few hours.

Santorini Museum

Besides the beautiful scenery around every corner, in Fira you can visit the Museum of Prehistoric art, located near the square, dedicated to the history of the ancient city and the island. Pieces on display range from the Neolithic to the late Cycladic period. Near the cable station is  the Archaeological Museum, hosts mainly a collection of ceramics and some remains of the archaic and classical periods, as well as sculptures and portraits from Hellenistic and Roman era. In the beautiful palace Megaron Gyzi are permanent exhibitions of old manuscripts relating to the public life of Santorini, while the folklore museum Emmanouela Lignos is a residence built in a cave which contains a number of findings that present the folklore of the island and the lives of islanders.

Imerovigli and Oia

Less than a kilometer from Fira is Firostefani  famous for its spectacular views from the Caldera, especially at sunset time. It is located on the highest vantage point, therefore it not so touristic, so it can be enjojed in tranquility.  Do not miss a visit to the church of the Virgin of Agios Theodoris,  recognizable by its yellow facade and bell tower with three bells.

Imerovigli village 2 km from Fira is a beautiful village where you can enjoy the tranquility and peace of the place. Probably one of the most popular destinations of Santorini. Although the summer is very busy with tourists. Imerovigli is a place of absolute tranquility. It is built on top of the caldera, almost 300 meters above sea level and has a magnificent view of the volcanoes.

From Imerovigli to Oia is about 6 km. Oia, is one of the most beautiful villages in Santorini, known for its magical sunset. It is more quiet from the capital Fira, except at the time of the magical Santorini sunset. Numerous art galleries  give it a very positive atmosphere. Most of the architecture are hotels and houses in caves; houses carved into the soft volcanic material, once the homes of most poor people. Ammoudi, the port of Oia, and the nearby beach of Armenians. There are small fish taverns where you eat only fish of the day and small vessels that lead to the nearby island of Thirassia.
